The Board of Education fully recognizes the application of constitutional law to the area of student privacy concerning such items as lockers and student desks. However, it is charged with the maintenance of such property items and authorized inspection for any maintenance-related reasons. Concerning opening student lockers or desks for other reasons, the following shall be considered applicable throughout the Cumberland County School District:
Desks, lockers, and other equipment at any school belongs to the school district and although assigned to particular students for use, may be entered and searched by school officials whenever said school officials have reasonable belief some substance or contraband is contained therein which is illegal, harmful to the safety of the student or the student body as a whole, or significantly disruptive of or dangerous to the overall discipline of the school.
All students, staff, and visitors will walk through the Open Gate System (Weapons Detector), and bags that are not clear or mesh will be confiscated. Cumberland County Schools has also adopted the clear bag policy for athletic events. Visitors will also be screened through the Raptor System as another level of security.
